If you see a redhead backpacker with a beat-up Olympus holding the map upside down, that’s probably me. To my mum’s utmost horror, I’ve been on and off the road since 2012 and can’t seem to stop. I’m Finnish and always searching for the perfect lipstick as well as a place to call home.

FRIENDS. We work all day but at least the view is FRIENDS.

We work all day but at least the view is good. Towards sunset, general moral starts to crack and the usual banter turns into total gibberish and I think if anyone saw us now, they would surely think us completely insane.

At dinner, Tim says that we will meet each other over and over again, that in twenty years we will all still sit at the same table, and Mel screams that we should all meet in France.

I know people say things they dont mean, and they make promises they can't later keep; but right now I am looking at the faces around me that by pure coincidences were brought to me and I think it is so nice to be surrrounded by people who think that in twenty years they'll still be friends the same way as today.

Twenty years is such a long time. Almost unimaginable.
'In twenty years we will still be disagreeing about everything', Tim quips at me.

I smile back. Maybe twenty years is not impossible. 'Sure, ill stick around for that', I reply.

VACCINES💥 Have you got your Covid vax yet? I VACCINES💥

Have you got your Covid vax yet?

I can't wait to get mine but we'll see if that's even possible - maybe if I can get to Finland this summer, but the process has been super slow there, and I'm in the last age group to get it 😬 they've also started vaccinating people in Bali but I think only in a few towns, and there is literally no info: I only heard about it bc someone I know in Ubud got vaccinated. (Not a surprise, this is the place that basically announced borders re-opening late at night on Instagram, then deleted the post a couple of hours later and never addressed it again lol.)

(Also I'm not here to fight about vaccines. Not my thang. If you're suspicious, I highly encourage checking out highlights from @twodustytravelers!)

Because of this, I'm a little worried about this vax passport thingy. I'm definitely not opposed (hey consporacy theorists, vaccine passports are ALREADY a thing) but the way global vaccinations are going, there are many people who haven't got a chance to get the shot even if they wanted to. I mean sure me included but I'll probably get it sooner than later. I'm talking about countries that simply don't have access to enough vaccines - vaccine disparity is real.

So I hope that vaccination passports will not be enforced until everyone who wants the vaccination has had the chance to get one.

What are your thoughts about this?

CONNECTIONS 💥💥💥 This is Khor Virap, poss CONNECTIONS 💥💥💥

This is Khor Virap, possibly the most famous monastery in Armenia, with Mount Ararat on the background - the place where Noah's ark is said to have rocked up. I hitchhiked there from Yerevan, and I was just vibin' around when a Portuguese guy asked me to take his photo.

We went back to the city together to meet his friend, watched the sunset and spoke mixed languages, talked idly about things that travellers talk about. That was one day almost two years ago and he still sometimes texts to see how I'm doing. (I rarely respond because I am garbage.)

When I look at this photo, that's what I see: the connections you make while travelling that you really can't get any other way. I fervently love&adore my community in Bali - but I miss striking up conversations in hostels with the up-bunk neighbour. I miss sharing wine and stories from places beyond. I miss falling in love with beautiful men that I've known for a week and that I'll never see again. I miss the excitement of never knowing who you'll meet next - a friend for life, or just an inspiring stranger.

I can't wait to start backpacking again.

Do you keep in touch with travel friends? If you have awesome travel buddy stories, I would love to hear them!

BALI IS FAKE, HERE'S WHY. 1. The famous photo of BALI IS FAKE, HERE'S WHY.

1. The famous photo of the gates and the reflection are staged - the reflection actually comes from a guy holding a mirror under the camera.

2. That other famous gate with a road running through it is actually an entrance to a golf resort.

3. Waterfall pictures (like this one! Trust no one! Not even me!) look this good bc they're taken with a slow shutter speed which gives the water a glowy blur effect.

4. All those cute cafes were not just born cute - they were specifically made for Instagram.

5. Most photos of famous attractions have a million hidden or out-photoshopped people on the background, and the influencer posing in the photo might have waited an hour AND paid extra to take a photo there.

Bali on Instagram is fake. In my opinion, there hardly needs to be any new Bali content on Insta - it is already ridiculously overrepresented, and for me the way it seemed on social media almost made me not want to move here.

I'm glad I did. Because for every overtouristed waterfall there is a secret one with a death-defying descent to get to it. For every overshared attraction, there is another corner of the island that you only accidentally stumble upon. The sunrise from Mount Batur pales in comparison with waking up in a misty old growth forest with nothing but the spirits and silence around you. And sitting in front of my laptop sharing a cafe with a bunch of friends in front of an ocean view? Yeah, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

Bali on Instagram is pretty but shallow; everyday life here is freaking awesome.

Have you been to Bali? Does it feel like the same place in photos than in reality?
POETRY. Apparently yesterday was UNESCO's assigne POETRY.

Apparently yesterday was UNESCO's assigned World Poetry Day! How did no one tell me?? Altho with an active imagination and an overdramatic attitude towards heartbreak, every day is poetry day to me. (Yall should see my secret folders. More angst than an average MCR album.)

Anyway, here's a little poem I wrote a while ago when I was going through old photos and missing epic hikes like this one ⬆️

'For months I have been lying down my things
Piece by piece
In neat lines, said, 'I am happy here -
This is all I need.'

Where are my wild ways now?
Where the broken boots that let me through river valleys and lonely hillsides
In memoriam to stars and foreign cars
I am happy here
I am happy here.

Yesterday I noticed that planes fly over my house
What a shame -
I had almost been content to stay.'

Any of u write poetry? Or read it? Or care about it?

IT'S NYEPI AGAIN! The biggest and most important IT'S NYEPI AGAIN!

The biggest and most important Balinese holiday happens tomorrow: Nyepi, the day of shut the fuck up or the demons will eat you.

Nyepi is the 3rd day of the 6-day Balinese New Year celebration and it's a legally enforced day of silence. Wifi is cut off in most places, loud talking and music are prohibited, and no one is allowed to leave their house for 24 hours.

The reason people have to keep quiet is so that the bad spirits won't find them. Usually the day before Nyepi, every temple builds a cool demon statue, parades them down the street and eventually burns them on the beach to get rid of the bad spirits. (Because of corona, all that was cancelled for the second year in a row.)

On Nyepi, lights are turned off and everyone stays reeeeaal quiet to trick the leftover spirits into thinking there are no people on the island so that they would leave too.

I'm not so sure I believe in spirits and all that - but the vibe at my house has been weird and off all week, and I'm not the only one saying that. So who knows.

Oh and of any spirits are reading this, hi, big fan of your work, when you leave could you take corona with you? Thank u very much have a safe trip!
